Reading the column “Writers and Books” by José Condé in the Correia da Manhã on 6 May 1964, 16-year old Paulo Coelho marks the last 2 paragraphs and writes down the comment “Uma semana antes, escrevi para J. Condé mandando minhas poesias, e pedindo sua critica. E me aparece isto no jornal.” (A week ago, I wrote to J. Condé, sending him my poetry and asked him for his opinion. And this appears in the newspaper”. Translation of the marked paragraphs below.

Em seu livro Os Mortos de Sobrecasaca, Álvaro Lins estabelece a seguinte distinção entre poetas maiores e poetas menores: “distingue-se um poeta maior, pela sua faculdade de penetrar até o fundo do núcleo essencial dos fenômenos. Distingue-se um poeta menor pela sua permanência nos aspectos superficiais, exteriores, acidentais dos objetos”.

Aos jovens afoitos, ansiosos de aparecer e publicar livros, conviria lembrar o exemplo de Carlos Drummond de Andrade, que durante quinze anos sòmente publicou três pequenos volumes, com um total de cento e quatro poesias … E ainda outro dia um critico acentuava que Ernest Hemingway reescreveu nada menos de vinte vêzes essa pequena obra-prima que é O Velho e o Mar. 

In his book Os Mortos de Sobrecasaca, Álvaro Lins makes the following distinction between major poets and minor poets: “a major poet is distinguished by his ability to penetrate to the bottom of the essential core of phenomena. A minor poet is distinguished by their permanence in the superficial, external, accidental aspects of objects ”.

To the daring young people, anxious to appear and publish books, it would be worth remembering the example of Carlos Drummond de Andrade, who for fifteen years only published three small volumes, with a total of one hundred and four poems … And still another day a critic emphasised that Ernest Hemingway rewrote this little masterpiece that is The Old Man and the Sea no less than twenty times.
